The Free option allows you to select a range of frames to play back during interactive playback. Once activated you can drag the two selection markers at the top of the Timeline window to define the frame range you want to play back.
If your scene plays over 60 frames, but you just wanted to review frames 20 to 30, you can change the playback range to play only those frames.
To activate the free playback range mode:
Two diamond shaped selection markers appear at the first and last frame of the scene. You can drag these two select the start and end playback range.
